About Scalar Functions
Scalar functions operate on a single value and return a single value. You can use them wherever an expression is valid.
You use scalar functions to return information from a database. You can use them in a SELECT list, a WHERE clause, and anywhere an expression is allowed. Functions are often used as part of a stored procedure.
