Since the first release of Mimer on VMS in 1982 (Mimer version 3.1 on VAX VMS 3), a large number of Mimer users have deployed their solutions on the VMS platform.
Mimer SQL on OpenVMS provides a server platform that provides performance and scalability for mission-critical database applications.
Mimer SQL is currently used in many mission critical systems running HP OpenVMS on AlphaServer systems and on HP Integrity servers worldwide. With Mimer SQL customers will benefit from a high performance and zero maintenance DBMS. The compatibility in Mimer SQL between HP AlphaServer systems and Integrity servers makes it possible to migrate Mimer SQL database applications for OpenVMS from AlphaServer systems to Integrity servers without any application modifications.
A Mimer SQL distribution for OpenVMS contains several components, as described below.
A default license for testing and development is included, it allows up to ten concurrent users. For license upgrades, please contact Mimer SQL sales.
The Mimer SQL database server is a single, multi-threaded process. By using DecThreads, good SMP scalability is achieved.
Clients using TCP/IP or Decnet can access the server. For clients running on the same platform, a special shared-memory based communication method is used.
An embedded SQL preprocessor is included. It enables SQL commands to be embedded in programs written in C, C++, FORTRAN and COBOL. The embedded syntax complies with the ISO standard for embedded SQL.
A JDBC driver is included in the distribution. The driver is a type 4 driver, which means that it is written entirely in Java. This provides the driver with full portability so that it can be copied or downloaded to any Java-enabled platform. The driver uses TCP/IP to access a Mimer SQL server (version 8.2 or later) on any platform.
Three drivers are supplied, compatible with JDBC 1 (requires JDK 1.1.8), JDBC 2 (requires Java 1.2) and JDBC 3 (requires Java 1.4 or later).
Use h18000.www1.hp.com/java/alpha/index.html for more information about Java on OpenVMS.
The Mimer ODBC driver is a client library that enables applications to access Mimer SQL database servers running on any platform. The driver complies with the ODBC 3.52 specification.
By using the ODBC driver on OpenVMS, you can develop ODBC applications and execute them on the OpenVMS platform.
Unlike other platforms, OpenVMS does not include a Driver Manager that enables OpenVMS applications to dynamically load drivers for different database products. Until such a Driver Manager becomes available on OpenVMS, you can link your applications directly to the Mimer ODBC driver.
Note that in order to run an ODBC application on a Windows platform, the Windows ODBC driver has to be installed on the client side. This driver can then access Mimer database servers on any platform (including OpenVMS). There is no need to install any special software on the server side in order to use ODBC.
The Mimer SQL product for OpenVMS includes the Mimer manuals if Adobe PDF format. To view the manuals, either use the XPDF utility that is available on the OpenVMS Freeware CD-ROM, or transfer the files to another platform with better PDF viewing support.
Alternatively, point your browser to the Mimer SQL documentation page and read the documentation in HTML format.
Mimer SQL includes command-line utilities for creating databases, load and unload of data, backups, etc.
There is also a program that enables SQL statements to be executed interactively from a command prompt.
The Mimer SQL distribution also contains examples of database programs and SQL statements.
Developer and evaluation versions of Mimer SQL for all platforms, including OpenVMS, are available for free download from the Mimer SQL developer web site downloads page.
Mimer SQL requires Open VMS 8.3 or later on the HP Integrity Server platform.
For the AlphaServer Mimer SQL should be used with OpenVMS 7.3 or later. If you use OpenVMS 7.3, the patch PTHREAD_V0300 is needed. If you use OpenVMS 7.3-1, the patch PTHREAD_V0100 is needed.
The VAX architecture is not supported by later Mimer SQL versions since the DecThreads upcall mechanism is not available there.
